Locations and time
Locations are super important to outdoor photography. I do have a few favorite locations that I like to use not just because they have a lot of background options and looks, but because I know the light at these locations. I know how it will look at sunset or sunrise and where to go to maximize that light. When I don’t know a location I have to do a lot eyeballing and estimating - which isn’t bad, I just need a bit more patience at new locations. This is why I stick to the same locations over and over.
I also try to book sessions at golden hour (or within an hour of it) and I typically don’t shoot for more than an hour. Most of the time by the end of an hour the little ones are about done (emotionally) and everyone is a bit out of breath from laughing (#forthewin).
What to Expect Before the Session
You may already be somewhere in the middle of this, but I am a fan of process. I love consistency, and I want to make sure you have what you need. I will send you:
A contract that has dates, times, locations for our session
An invoice for a $50 deposit (currently waived)
Two reminders (if time allows) about your session
A questionnaire so I can learn more about you
Directions. to the session location
I am here to help answer questions about your upcoming pictures, please don’t hesitate to reach out at ANY point in this process.
What about Props
Props can be super effective, but I personally do not use them for regular family sessions (minis are different). I will bring a blanket/quilt for us to use so that everyone can sit comfortably on the ground but that’s really it. If you want to bring something to use in the session please do let me know so that I can brainstorm how best to use it. My hope is that when you look at your gallery you won’t even miss the styling of props because you’ll be so in love with the connection and beauty of your family.
